Ireland Agrees to Self-Declaration for Gender Recognition Bill
Yesterday (Wednesday 3rd June), the Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, T.D. announced that, following the agreement of Cabinet, the application process under the Gender Recognition Bill will, for people aged 18 years or more, be based on the person’s self-declaration by way of a statutory declaration. The Bill will also no longer contain the controversial ‘forced divorce’ clause.

Transgender People in Ireland Face High Rates of Violence
Today (9th December) the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) launched a ground-breaking report ‘Being Trans in the European Union’. The report points to how trans people experience frequent discrimination and harassment, and draws upon the responses to FRA’s wider EU LGBT survey. The survey’s most striking result is the high level of repetitive violence and hate-motivated crime trans persons suffer.
Despite Rise in Positive Visibility, Trans People Still Face High Levels of Violence
Today (20th November) is Trans Day of Remembrance. This is an international day of commemoration that memoralises the lives lost in the course of the year due to transphobia and it also raises awareness of the violence trans people can face simply because they are trans. The Trans Day of Remembrance began in 1998 in the United States in response to the murder of Rita Hester, a trans woman.
TENI Welcomes News of Settlement in Lydia Foy Case
Yesterday (28th October), Lydia Foy reached a settlement in her 21 year legal battle against the State to have her female gender recognised. Settlement was reached after the State declared a ‘firm intention’ to enact gender recognition legislation in 2015.
Ireland : First Employers Seminar on Transgender Equality and Diversity
Leading Irish companies met today for the first time to discuss how they can support transgender employees in their workplaces. The seminar “Creating Transgender Inclusive Workplaces” is jointly organised by GLEN Diversity Champions programme and Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI).
