Belgrade Pride banned: Members of the European Parliament express deep regret
The Serbian LGBT pride march Parada Ponosa, due to take place last Sunday in the capital, was banned Friday by the National Security Council. The Council announced it would forbid the pride march, as well as three far-right counter-protests that were planned last Saturday and Sunday.
EP: World Health Organization must stop treating transgender people as mentally ill
In a resolution adopted yesterday, the European Parliament has called on the World Health Organization to stop considering transgender people as mentally ill. ‘Gender identity disorder’ is currently classified as a ‘mental and behavioural disorder’ in the WHO’s International Classification of Diseases.
MEPs welcome Lithuania’s new progressive law on advertising
A new Law on the Provision of Information to the Public came into force on 30 June, outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation. Previous drafts of the law had included a ban on mentioning homosexuality, but the Lithuanian Parliament made a volte-face and rejected these proposals.
Welcomes the European Commission’s proposal on better protection of crime victims
On 18 May 2011, the European Commission proposed a package of legislative measures to strengthen victims’ rights in the European Union including a proposal for a new directive establishing minimum standards on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime which would improve the existing Framework Decision on the standing of victims in criminal proceedings (2001.220/JHA).
ILGA-Europe urges Hungarian parliamentarians to uphold European human rights standards
Next Monday, 18 April 2011, the Hungarian parliamentarians will have their final vote on the proposal for a new Constitution of Hungary. Various provisions of the draft of the Constitutions already caused serious concerns from various European institutions and human rights organisations. ILGA-Europe joins these concerns and urges the Hungarian parliamentarians not to support those provisions which do not meet minimum European human rights standards.
Macedonia must protect lesbian, gay and bisexual people, says the European Parliament
Today the European Parliament adopted its annual progress report on the accession of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the European Union, asking the country to outlaw discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation.
