TLDEF Responds to Guilty Plea in Killing of Islan Nettles
The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) responded to news from Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. that 25-year-old James Dixon has pleaded guilty to First Degree Manslaughter in the August 2013 killing of Islan Nettles, a 21-year-old African American transgender woman from Harlem. Dixon faces 12 years in prison after accepting the plea deal.

Vance Jr. that his office has indicted 24-year old James Dixon on first and second degree manslaughter and first degree assault charges for the August 17, 2013 killing of Islan Nettles, a 21-year-old African American transgender woman from Harlem.

The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) marks the Transgender Day of Remembrance today by urging the public to reflect on all of the transgender people whose lives were ended by violence, simply for living as their authentic selves. The people we have lost include two young, African American transgender women, Islan Nettles, who was beaten to death in Harlem in August of 2013, and Lateisha (Teish) Green, who was shot in Syracuse in 2008.
