HRC Applauds Administration for Joining United Nations on Ending Violence Towards LGBT People
Today, the U.S. joined over 80 countries to issue a statement at the United Nations Human Rights Council entitled “Ending Acts of Violence and Related Human Rights Violations Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.” The statement “express[es] concern at continued evidence in every region of acts of violence and related human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity.” In addition, it “call[s] on States to take steps to end acts of violence, criminal sanctions and related human rights violations committed against individuals because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
Legislation Introduced in Senate and House to Extend Equal COBRA Benefits to LGBT Families
The Human Rights Campaign, the America’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organisation, today praised Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY) for introducing the Equal Access to COBRA Act of 2011, which would equalise the benefits under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), guaranteeing continuation health coverage to any qualified beneficiary under an employer’s health insurance plan, including domestic partners and the children of domestic partners when employers choose to cover them.
Student Non-Discrimination Act Re-Introduced in Congress
The Human Rights Campaign – America’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organisation – today applauded the introduction of the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA) by Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., and Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo. SNDA would prohibit public elementary and secondary schools from discriminating against any student on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.
HRC & NEA Applaud Senate Reintroduction of Safe Schools Improvement Act
