Yesterday, in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Chairman Patrick Leahy brought up an amendment to allow an American citizen’s foreign-born same-sex spouse the ability to become a citizen, just as straight couples are currently allowed to do, but after debate, the Chairman did not call for a vote on the measure.

The Human Rights Campaign – Americas’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organisation – praised yesterday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the Respect for Marriage Act – a bill that would repeal the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act that denies federal recognition to legally married same-sex couples.
