Illinois Bill Protecting LGBT Youth from Conversion Therapy Moves to Governor
Today, the Illinois State Senate voted 34 -19 to pass House Bill 217, the Illinois Youth Mental Health Protection Act that will protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth from the dangerous and discredited practices of conversion therapy. The bill was overwhelmingly approved 68-43 by the State House in May and is heading to the desk of Republican Governor Bruce Rauner.
Labor Department to Protect Transgender Workers from Employment Discrimination
Yesterday the Department of Labor announced that it would be updating enforcement protocols and anti-discrimination guidance clarifying the reach of the federal non-discrimination laws enforced by the Department and ensuring full protection for transgender individuals covered by these laws.
HRC Statement on the Supreme Court Ruling in Hobby Lobby
Today the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling in two cases, collectively known as the Hobby Lobby case, in which the Justices were asked to decide whether requiring a corporation to provide insurance coverage that includes contraception under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a “substantial burden” on the corporation, and violates Christian business owners’ religious freedom rights.
U.S Supreme Court Won’t Hear Photographer Discrimination Case
Today the Supreme Court of the United States announced without comment that it won’t hear the case of a New Mexico photography business which claimed its rights were violated when the owner refused to photograph a same-sex wedding and was found in violation of the state’s nondiscrimination law.
HRC Calls for Explicit Civil Rights Protections in Mississippi Religious Freedom Bill
Today the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is calling on the Mississippi legislature to further amend the proposed “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” in order to make real their stated desire that the bill not undercut the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Maryland Transgender Non-Discrimination Bill Passes Full Senate
Today the Fairness for All Marylanders Act, a bill that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations and credit, passed the full Senate after last week having been voted out of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.
