The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) applauds news that transgender New Yorkers covered by Medicaid can now access the medically necessary health care they have been denied for nearly two decades. Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Department of Health have officially adopted a new regulation that ends the 17-year-old exclusion of transgender health care from New York’s Medicaid program.

Introduced by Republican State Representative Gilbert Peña on March 10, House Bills 2801 and 2802 come on the heels of a string of bills targeting transgender people, including a prior bill in Texas, and similar ones in Kentucky, Florida and Minnesota.
TLDEF Condemns Minnesota Legislation Meant to Harm Transgender Students
TLDEF denounces yet another attempt to target transgender students for discrimination, this time in Minnesota. Republican state lawmakers introduced identical bills in the Minnesota State House and Senate.HF 1456 and SF 1543 would deny transgender students the ability to play on sports teams or use bathrooms and locker rooms that match who they are as boys and girls. The legislation would invalidate the Minnesota State High School League’s transgender-inclusive athletic policy and bar school districts from implementing similar policies designed to allow transgender students to participate equally in school. The bills come in response to pressure from anti-LGBT groups in Minnesota.
Only in America : Kentucky Bill Targeting Transgender Students for Discrimination
The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) denounces passage of a Kentucky Senate bill that singles out transgender students in that state for discrimination. Introduced by Kentucky State Senator CB Embry, Jr.,SB 76 would bar transgender students from using bathrooms and locker rooms that match who they truly are as boys and girls. The State Senate approved the bill last Friday on a 27-9 vote and sent it to the Kentucky House of Representatives.
TLDEF Responds to Indictment in the Killing of Islan Nettles
The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) responded to the announcement by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. that his office has indicted 24-year old James Dixon on first and second degree manslaughter and first degree assault charges for the August 17, 2013 killing of Islan Nettles, a 21-year-old African American transgender woman from Harlem.
