New York High Court Allows Retrial on Hate Crime Charge in Killing of Transgender Woman Lateisha Green
The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) today renewed its call for justice in the case of a slain transgender woman after the New York State Court of Appeals overturned the hate crime conviction of the man accused of killing her but allowed the state to retry him on the disputed hate crime charge. DeLee was originally convicted of manslaughter in the first degree as a hate crime for the 2008 killing of Syracuse resident Lateisha “Teish” Green, a 22-year-old African American transgender woman.
TLDEF Encouraged by Maryland’s Progress Towards Expanding Medicaid Coverage for Transgender People
The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) today responded to news that Maryland has moved a step closer to making transition-related health care available to its transgender residents who receive Medicaid. Maryland health officials are submitting regulations for approval that will expand Medicaid by April 2015. Once approved, the state will join California, Massachusetts, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington D.C., which have all expanded Medicaid coverage for transgender people. The United States Department of Health and Human Services also recently ruled that the federal Medicare program must cover transition-related health care.
Despite Rise in Positive Visibility, Trans People Still Face High Levels of Violence
Today (20th November) is Trans Day of Remembrance. This is an international day of commemoration that memoralises the lives lost in the course of the year due to transphobia and it also raises awareness of the violence trans people can face simply because they are trans. The Trans Day of Remembrance began in 1998 in the United States in response to the murder of Rita Hester, a trans woman.

The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) marks the Transgender Day of Remembrance today by urging the public to reflect on all of the transgender people whose lives were ended by violence, simply for living as their authentic selves. The people we have lost include two young, African American transgender women, Islan Nettles, who was beaten to death in Harlem in August of 2013, and Lateisha (Teish) Green, who was shot in Syracuse in 2008.
