TLDEF Remembers Transgender Families as Supreme Court Takes Up Historic Marriage Equality Cases Today
The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) recognizes the transgender families we serve as the Supreme Court today hears challenges to restrictions on the freedom to marry in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee. Today’s historic proceeding sets the stage for a ruling in June that could bring marriage equality to LGBT people throughout the country, including to the transgender families that have experienced tremendous hardship as a result of discriminatory restrictions on the freedom to marry.
Settlement Reached in Landmark Federal Lawsuit Against South Carolina DMV on Behalf of Transgender Teen
The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) announces a settlement in a historic federal lawsuit against the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles on behalf of Chase Culpepper. Chase is a transgender girl who was targeted for discrimination in March 2014 when she attempted to get her first driver’s license. She was told by DMV employees that she could not take her photo unless she removed the makeup that she wears on a regular basis. They told her that she needed to “look male” in her license photo and refused to provide her with her driver’s license if she did not remove the makeup she was wearing.

Texas Bill Targeting Transgender Students for Discrimination on Hold
The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) responded to news that the Texas Legislature’s State House Affairs Committee had delayed a bill singling out transgender students for discrimination. Introduced by Republican State Representative Gilbert Peña, House Bill 2801 would have required schools to adopt policies prohibiting transgender students from using bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with who they are as boys and girls. It would also have made schools liable for a minimum of $2,000 in damages that they would have had to pay to students who complained that they encountered a transgender student in a prohibited bathroom.
