
Gay fears stop men teaching, says NUT
Poor pay and fears that they may be perceived as gay are putting off men becoming primary school teachers, according to a union leader, Coventry Telegraph reports.
In Warwickshire primary schools , there are 226 male teachers – 24 per cent.
Some schools, particularly the smaller ones, have no male teachers.
Joint divisional secretary of the National Union of Teachers Tony Souter said: “We feel that teachers should reflect the social mix of the people around them.
“It’s important that there are male role models in primary schools but a lot of the time we don’t see them.”
“They are worried that if they say they’re a primary school teacher people will think they’re gay.
