No change to blood rules for gay men
There are no plans to change the rules prohibiting homosexual and bisexual men in Ireland from donating blood, the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) has confirmed.
Last week, the National Blood Service in England, Scotland and Wales changed its rules by introducing a 12-month deferral system. Any man who has sex with other men, but has not done so in the last 12 months, will be permitted to donate blood from November 2011.
The rules excluding men who have sex with other men were originally put in place to prevent the risk of contamination with HIV.
However, the IBTS says it does not plan to follow its UK counterpart, irishhealth.com reports.
