Denmark to become first country not to define being transgender as a mental illness
Denmark is about to make a landmark move for the transgender community.
Not a lot of people know this – but being transgender is still classified as a mental illness by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
And Danish government officials are ‘running out of patience’, so they’ve put pressure on the public health arm to change its ‘discriminatory’ definition.
Health Minister Sophie Lohde confirmed that if it’s not redefined before October, the government will push ahead with the amendment regardless.
This will make Denmark the first country in the world to remove the mental health stigma, Metro.co.uk reports.
