
Man apprehended in Qatar Grindr «sting» receives sentence
A British-Mexican man, arrested in Qatar in what his family described as a «honeytrap operation» on the gay dating app Grindr, has received a six-month suspended sentence and will be deported.
Manuel Guerrero Aviña (44) was convicted for possessing an illicit substance during a trial in Doha, and fined £2,100. His relatives claim that the police framed him by planting drugs in his residence, while Mr. Guerrero Aviña suspects he was singled out due to his sexual orientation, BBC reports.
FairSquare, an organisation advocating for human rights, denounced his court proceedings as an «injustice», yet authorities in Qatar maintain that his apprehension in February, as an airline employee, was solely linked to drug-related violations.
