With his trademark dry wit, veteran actor wonders why he can’t win an Academy Award for playing a straight man – when three straight men have won for portraying gay men.

The veteran actor made his comments after no ethnic minority actors were nominated for the big acting awards for the second year running, sparking a boycott and calls for reform.

Sir Ian McKellen, 76, who is gay and a co-founder of Stonewall, expressed sympathy with black actors for being “ill-treated” but added that the question of diversity went further than race.
