France witnessed the appointment of its youngest-ever prime minister on Tuesday, who also happens to be the first openly gay individual to hold the position.

This move comes as President Emmanuel Macron strives for a new beginning for the remainder of his term, in the face of increasing political challenges from the far right, NPR reports.

Gabriel Attal, aged 34, gained fame as the government spokesperson and later as the education minister. He was considered the most popular minister in the previous government.

His predecessor, Elisabeth Borne, resigned on Monday amidst political upheaval over an immigration law aimed at enhancing the government’s capacity to deport foreigners.

Macron will collaborate with Attal to appoint a new government in the upcoming days, with some key ministers likely to retain their positions.
