Parliament human rights report addresses LGBTI criminalisation, trans rights and same-sex unions
Last week, the European Parliament voted its annual report on human rights in the world. The report takes account of the situation of human rights, including of LGBTI people, and makes recommendations accordingly. The report contains strong language on the rights of LGBTI people.
Strasbourg Court: sterilisation requirement for gender reassignment surgery is a violation of privacy
Tuesday, the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruled that the requirement of permanent infertility to undergo gender reassignment surgery is a violation of the right to privacy, as guaranteed by Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Only in America : Opposition to Georgia’s License to Discriminate Bill
The Georgia Senate is considering SB 129 this afternoon, a so-called “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” (RFRA) that would make it legal for any individual or business in the state to discriminate against others – including LGBT people – and claim they can do so because of their religious beliefs. The GOP-led Senate is not allowing amendments to be offered – amendments which could have allowed for keeping the religious freedom component of the bill in place while carving out common sense protections to ensure the bill couldn’t be used to discriminate.

Chad: President Must Scrap Homophobic Bill
The President of Chad, Idriss Deby, has been directly warned that if a homophobic bill currently before parliament is passed, he will be showing a blatant disregard for the country’s human rights obligations. In an open letter published today, Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Salil Shetty, calls on the President to scrap the bill which threatens to impose jail sentences of up to 20 years and heavy fines for people “found guilty” of same sex activity.
Fiji: Bainimarama must end climate of fear
Fiji’s Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama’s eight years in power have seen ongoing serious human rights violations fuel a climate of fear that must be brought to an end, Amnesty International said in a new briefing published ahead of the leader’s visit to New Zealand this week.
