Quebec bill proposes legal name and gender change for transgender children
A new bill introduced in the National Assembly will allow transgender children as young as 14 to be legally entitled to modify their birth certificate to indicate their gender of choice in Quebec.
Bill 103, tabled Tuesday by Justice Minister Stéphanie Vallée, aims to help abolish transphobia and help children and teens who feel their gender expression does not match their gender identity.
Children under the age of 14 will also be able to change their names or registered gender on their birth certificates if a request filed by their parents or caretakers is approved by the Registrar of Civil Status.
